In the old days, city homes were fashioned with intricate means of diverting rain water from the roof into the common sanitary sewer system. As time went on building codes were changed and rain water from rooves was routed into a seperate storm sewer system. Eventually this practice was abondoned altogether because heavy rains tended to overwhelm the sewer system which leads to spilling contaminated water into lakes and rivers when treatment plants can’t handle the load. Most cities including Hamilton now encourage homeowners to divert their downspouts onto their own property. We at PBF Plumbing feel this is an important effort to help prevent neighborhood flooding through sewer back-ups. We are happy to assist homeowners in being good neighbors.
